Weather Conditions

While South Africa is often sunny and warm, weather can vary significantly by region. In the Magaliesberg and Cradle of Humankind, hot air ballooning is highly weather-dependent. Calm, dry conditions are essential, as flying in wind or rain is unsafe. Safety is our top priority, so flights may be cancelled if conditions are not suitable.

Why Weather Matters

The Magaliesberg and Cradle of Humankind region is in a summer rainfall area. Unlike coastal regions, it rarely experiences heavy winter rainfall, making ballooning possible throughout much of the year. However, conditions can still change quickly, so flexibility is important.

Weather Dependency & Flight Safety

  • Flights are not possible in windy or rainy conditions.
  • Meeting on time is essential to avoid turbulence and thermals that develop after sunrise.
  • Cancellations may occur the night before or even at the launch site if weather is unsafe.
  • In the event of a weather-related cancellation, we’ll do our best to reschedule at a convenient time, or provide a refund if rescheduling isn’t possible.

What to Wear

  • Dress in layers that can be removed as the day warms.
  • Long pants and flat shoes are recommended for comfort and safety.
